The Bynx Collection Features Some of The Legendary Author’s Most Celebrated Works
Cormac McCarthy is one of the most celebrated authors of his generation. He’s written twelve novels, two plays, five screenplays and three short stories throughout his prolific career. Our collection of Modern First Editions at Bynx features several of his most important and impressive works. Today we’ll highlight those titles, each of which had a profound influence on modern literature.
Cormac McCarthy: A Maverick of American Literature
Cormac McCarthy was born in Rhode Island on July 20th, 1933. He began writing seriously in 1951 while attending The University of Tennessee. He dropped out of college after publishing several successful short stories and instead focused on writing. In 1965, his first novel, The Orchard Keeper, was published by Random House and garnered him the William Faulkner Foundation Award for notable first novel.
McCarthy then went on to write several important novels throughout a lengthy career. His unique writing style is now recognized for his sparse use of punctuation, attribution and stark depictions of violence and use of vivid imagery. His most notable books are perhaps Blood Meridian and The Road, the latter of which was a post-apocalyptic masterpiece that landed him the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction.
A dedicated artist, early in his career McCarthy opted to fully commit himself to his work, which often meant he and his family would live in poverty for the sake of his dedication to his art. Indeed, as he said in one interview, writing “was [his] number one priority.” Still, while in the midst of his struggle, did he ever think he’d achieve the success he currently has as a writer? “In all honesty,” he said in the same interview, “I have to say I really don’t.”
“You would like for the people who appreciate the book to read it but as far as many, many people reading it, so what?” he said. “It’s ok, nothing wrong with it.”
Cormac McCarthy
In his 89th year, Cormac McCarthy is still writing. In 2022 he released The Passenger and a companion novel, Stella Maris, his first novels since The Road was published in 2006. These recent books are another testament to the depth of McCarthy’s creative well.
