A Love-able Rock Star
Dave Grohl will always be remembered as the guy smashing the drums for Nirvana. Like Monster from the Muppets, imprinted in our minds is a slow motion image of Dave whipping around his long, scraggly hair. This, of course, is just one part of his story. Dave is known for so much more.
The Energizer
Dave Grohl bleeds music and is blessed with seemingly limitless energy. From becoming the drummer of punk icon Scream at the tender age of 17, to joining Nirvana and subsequently founding Foo Fighters, Grohl has followed his musical intuition all his life. He’s also drummed for Queens of the Stone Age, Killing Joke, as well as the the zany-and-super-talented Tenacious D. Grohl is also the drummer and co-founder of the rock supergroup Them Crooked Vultures.
In 1997, he also began directing the Foo fighters music videos and released his debut documentary, Sound City in 2013. He followed this with the miniseries Sonic Highways in 2014 and the documentary film What Drives Us (2021). Then, in 2022, Grohl and the Foo Fighters starred as themselves in the comedy horror film Studio 666. If all this isn’t enough to convince you of his creative prowess, check out his video Play, which “celebrates the rewards and challenges of dedicating one’s life to playing and mastering a musical instrument.” Look at his face — it’s the face of a man at work in his passion.
From The Horse’s Mouth: The Story of Dave Grohl
But don’t take it from us. In 2021, Grohl released his autobiography, The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music. In it he details all of these adventures (plus a few misadventures) and more. The tragedies in his life are well-known and have hit him hard. Yet, somehow, he not only picks himself back up, but keeps building upon his legacy.
A Rock-Star Role Model
Dave’s not only a multi-talented rock star; he is genuinely known as “the nicest guy.” According to the Look To The Stars website, Dave has supported at least 16 charities over the decades including Stand Up To Cancer, the Elton John Aids Foundation, Worldwide Orphans Foundation, Teen Cancer America and Autism Speaks. He also gets his hands dirty, cooking a barbecue for firefighters battling Californian wildfires and at a food bank during Christmas. He also pulled a 16-hour shift in February 2023, cooking food for 500 homeless people in Los Angeles.
Of course there are numerous fan interactions and gestures that demonstrates how to use the power of celebrity and talent to give a stage to others.
Whether his music speaks to you or not, you can’t deny it: Dave Grohl is a multi-talented rockstar whose character inspires and unites us in a fragmented world.
