International Times [IT] was an underground countercultural newspaper that ran from October 1966 until 1978. Published every two weeks and edited by Barry Miles, David Mairowitz, and John “Hoppy” Hopkins, the Times became the leading British underground paper, with a circulation of 40,000 in 1968. The paper’s launch party was the first event at the Roundhouse–a pillar of the ‘60s British cultural revolution–and featured one of the earliest performances by Soft Machine and Pink Floyd, respectively. From 1967 onwards, the police surveilled and raided the offices of International Times. In 1972, the Times temporarily closed down after being convicted of conspiracy to corrupt public morals for printing gay personals. Contributors to the paper included feminist critic Germaine Greer, DJ John Peel, and leading countercultural writers Alexander Trocchi, William Burroughs, Abbie Hoffman, and Allen Ginsberg.
