To Have And Have Not was Hemingway's first full length novel since A Farewell to Arms was published eight years earlier. The novel explores social circumstances and situations in Key West - "that paradise of the 'haves' and “purgatory of the have nots." Basis for the 1944 Howard Hawks film co-scripted by William Faulkner and featuring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.
