Martin Sostre (1923-2015) was a politicized prisoner, jailhouse lawyer, community organizer, and teacher. From 1964 to 1967, Sostre ran a Black book and record store in Buffalo, New York, called the “Afro-Asian Bookshop.” His store served as a community hub and center for learning. Sostre advocated for prisoners’ legal rights, access to political reading materials, and freedom of thought. This work brought Sostre negative attention from authorities and he was eventually framed for a narcotics crime.
