Abbie Hoffman (1936-1989), Jerry Rubin (1938-1994) and Paul Krassner (born 1932) co-founded the Yippies (Youth International Party) in 1967 to defend civil liberties and alternative values ad lifestyls. They modelled their group loosely on the aims of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, which promoted equal rights and peace. Yippie activism involved promoting counter-culture movements, including drug use.
