This nature-spirit first appeared in The Fellowship of the Ring when Frodo Baggins came across him in the Old Forest. He is also referred to at the tail-end of The Return of the King, when Gandalf pays him a long visit. Bombadil calls himself 'The Master' or 'The Eldest'.
