A Tremendous Career
Ian McEwan is an immensely important British novelist, short-story writer, and screenwriter whose controlled, refined prose style accentuates his dark humour and often deviant subject matter. His contributions to literature have been so profound that the Daily Telegraph rated him 19th on its list of the “100 Most Powerful People In British Culture.”
Ian McEwan’s Early Works
Ian McEwan’s first two short-story collections brought him early acclaim; First Love, Last Rites (1975), which was the winner of a Somerset Maugham Award for writers under age 35 — and In Between the Sheets (1978). These two collections feature disturbing tales of sexual abnormalities, black comedy, and obsession. The Cement Garden (1978), McEwan’s first novel, traces the incestuous decline of a family of orphaned children. The Comfort of Strangers (1981), centers on an Engish couple in Venice who become entangled in the sadomasochistic sex-games of a local couple.
In the 1980s, and now with a family, McEwan’s novels became more devoted to related dynamics and political intrigue: The Child in Time (1987), which won the Whitbread Book Award, examines how a kidnapping affects the parents; The Innocent (1990) concerns international espionage during the Cold War. These were followed by Black Dogs (1992); The Daydreamer (1994) and Amsterdam (1998). The latter is a social satire influenced by the early works of Evelyn Waugh. It won the Booker Prize in 1998. Atonement (2001) is another of McEwan’s seminal works, which traces over six decades the consequences of a lie told in the 1930s.
