The 1960s was unarguably one of the most prolific periods in modern music history. We’ve already discussed the psychedelic imagery and sociopolitical environment that went hand-in-hand with the music itself. Whether its the posters, handbills, magazines, books, you name it: each reflects a radical shift in popular culture. But back to the music. In the 1960s, fans, musicians and hobbyists alike were still oftentimes picking up sheet music to play along with their favorite records. It’s pretty surreal to see single-song 1960s sheet music from bands like the Beatles and Rolling Stones. But it exists, and we’re fortunate to have a few examples in our collection. Let’s take a closer look at a few of them.
The Beatles Sheet Music
It would be remiss of us not to start with The Beatles! It’s wild to imagine people getting their hands on these back in the 60s, sitting at their piano learning songs that would go on to symbolize an entire generation. It’d be interesting to be a fly on the wall while the first person learned a song like “A Day In The Life.” I wonder at their reaction — whether they thought it was easy or difficult, how it felt to have a pop song laid out on the staff, how happy they were to play along with their new hit record. It also makes me think how easy we have it now with our computers, tablature, YouTube and streaming services. The person learning in the 60s would have had to play along with a 45 or find the right groove on an LP. Ah, technology.

Not Only The Beatles…
Ok, ok… don’t worry, if you’re not a massive Beatles fan (*we won’t judge*), we have more 1960s sheet music in our collection. There were all kinds of great songwriters releasing music in the 60s. From Laurel Canyon to London and everywhere in between, the fans too were desperate to learn all of these incredible songs. Oh, and being that is was the age of the album, it wasn’t just singles the fans were after — it was the full album songbooks, too. Either way, check out some of the other 1960s sheet music (and a few from later years) in our collection.
