Ernest Hemingway: Daring Journalist, Inspired Writer
Born in Oak Park, Illinois in 1899, Hemingway started his career as a writer in a newspaper office in Kansas City when he was just seventeen. During WWI, he became a volunteer ambulance writer in the Italian army and served on the front lines, where he was ultimately injured and decorated by the Italian government. When he returned to North America, he became a writer for American and Canadian newspapers and soon began reporting from Europe.
In the 1920s, Hemingway entered into the expatriate American society in Paris, which led to a creative spree that included his first important piece of fiction, The Sun Also Rises (1926). He then went on to write such lauded works as A Farewell to Arms (1929), For Whom The Bell Tolls (1940) and The Old Man And The Sea (1952), the latter of which won him the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
By the end of his career, Hemingway was known for his spare prose, terse dialogue and straightforward writing. When he passed away in 1961, he had won the Nobel Prize in Literature and amassed one of the most beloved and studied bibliographies in the history of literature.
