More about our modest but curated vinyl record collection
Humor me as I rewind the clock a couple years. It’s 2019; Philly and I are trotting through the busy streets of New York on a bitingly-cold January morning. We’re on our way to a small record store in the East Village, where we’ll make our first major vinyl acquisition. This particular collection is filled with unique gems, deep-cuts, box sets, bootlegs and plenty of albums from the semi-underground scene spanning the Midwest to the North East coast.
Once we make it to our destination and exchange niceties, the seller begins handing us box after box, which comprise hold the foundation of the Bynx Records collection. Later, after we finish piling the white cardboard boxes in the back of a rented GMC Yukon, it hits me: these are ours. Before long, these vinyl records will fill the shelves in our yet-to-be-finished shop. The image forms in my imagination. Less than a year later, imagination became reality.
The Start Of A Journey
This collection was the first of many we would acquire on our vinyl treasure hunt. By the time our shop opened its doors in December 2020, we had amassed thousands upon thousands of records. Each one had to be meticulously cleaned, graded, priced and packaged for sale. It was took months of work — a collective effort — and endless spins of the record player. Philly and I spent many a day sitting at the island in my kitchen, laptops facing one another, each man lost in his own box of vinyl. We’ll always look back at those early days as the start of something special.
Since then, we’ve grown quite a lot, gained a lot of experiential knowledge and fine-tuned our vinyl selection. Whereas our focus was initially on used records, we’ve since expanded to new records too. It’s important for us to stay current and have contemporary offerings, especially for our younger music-savvy customers. We want our collection to offer a portal into the past, while still rooting ourselves in the now.
Out wit… No, In With The Old And The New!
Still, we have a particular fondness for the gently-loved vinyl we house at our shop; whether it’s our Japanese Blue Note Jazz collection, our original presses of beloved classics, or our horde of 45s, there’s something magical about a vinyl record from the past. When you spin one, you’re spinning a bit of history.
Whether you’re looking to hunt for something old, or grab yourself something new, stop by the shop and check out our collection. We don’t place much emphasis on selling online, but if there’s every anything you’re after and we have it or can get it, we’d love to help. Just drop us a line or email info@bynx.co to get the conversation started!
