For many of us, the wafting aroma of a freshly brewed cup of coffee early in the morning is one of the most wonderful times of the day. There’s a particular magic in those beans and that first cup becomes ritualistic as many of us start, what is often a hectic day of juggling our personal and professional lives.
Coffee and Health Benefits

The comfort that we derive from that cup of joe, however, is also playing a role in extending our lives. As a very widely studied beverage in the world, the scientific findings seem quite clear: this particular cocktail of antioxidants, polyphenols, and natural compounds protects our bodies.*
As a start, evidence shows that regular coffee consumption is associated with a 20–30% reduced risk of Type 2 Diabetes. Moderate consumption (defined as 3–5 cups/day) is linked with a reduced risk of heart failure, stroke, and overall cardiovascular mortality. Coffee consumption is also strongly associated with a reduced risk of cirrhosis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and liver cancer. As well, evidence suggests protective effects against liver, endometrial, and colorectal cancers: Coffee contains chlorogenic acids and other compounds that help neutralize free radicals and reduce DNA damage.
Wait, There's More!
Caffeine is a proven to increase endurance, strength, and fat oxidation during physical activity. It has also been associated with lower risks of Parkinson’s disease and may even reduce depressive symptoms. Multiple studies suggest regular coffee drinkers have a reduced risk of depression and suicide. Large population studies also show regular coffee drinkers tend to live longer, with reduced all-cause mortalities.
Be Aware of the Risks!
It’s important to note that research also cites excess consumption can cause insomnia, anxiety, heart palpitations, digestive issues, urinary symptoms. Pregnant individuals should limit caffeine due to risks of low birth weight or miscarriage.

Plus, let's face it, we all know that one person who probably doesn't need caffeine!
Nothing Like That First Cuppa Joe
It seems clear to this writer, as I enjoy the day's first cup of coffee (Boxcar is my bean of choice), the scientific evidence supports solid health benefits from moderate coffee consumption (in my case, usually three 10oz cups each morning). Humans, in the never ending quest to live longer, can start each day with a wonderful cup of coffee that contributes to our wellbeing and provides so many intrinsic benefits. Plus, there’s that wonderful aroma!
