Dive Into Our Collection of New-Age Fantasy Novels
We humans love a good story, especially if it involves some far-flung fantasy. What better way to escape our mundane realities than to be transported to some imaginary world? Experience its extraordinary tales of heroism and adventure, or to re-imagine a radically different future? Our literary history is filled with such tales, particularly since the sci-fi wave of the early 1900s. Our collective imagination has created entire, unique universes filled with memorable characters and settings, as well as unforgettable plot lines. There are so many books we could discuss. Today, though, we’ll highlight just a few of the exciting titles on our shelves.
Fantasy vs. Science Fiction
Let’s first distinguish between two closely aligned genres:
- Science Fiction (stories are based on scientifically logical scenarios) and;
- Fantasy (disregards scientific laws and creates supernatural or magical themes that has little or no basis in reality).
The latter allows us to further expand our imagination. Often authors create impossible (perhaps!) scenarios, bending scientific fact to create an even broader experience of wonder. Of course, some readers are more enthusiastic about the “seemingly plausible” versus the “absolutely impossible”. Pick your poison!
The Golden Age of Fantasy On The Silver Screen
The advent of film provided a new dimension in the world of fantasy exploration. Nowadays, if a book becomes at all a part of the zeitgeist, you can expect it to be adapted into a film, short or TV series. Some obvious examples include The Lord Of The Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter, His Dark Materials and Game Of Thrones – all major blockbusters that only increased enthusiasm for the books. Notably, Netflix has recently released the trailer for the upcoming mystery series 3 Body Problem, which premieres March 21. This series is based on the trilogy’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past Trilogy by multi-award winning author Cixin Liu. Of course, we just wrote a piece on “books to film,” so we won’t go down this path. Suffice it to say that film has created a new hunger for fantasy, as people love to see their favorite novels brought to life.
The Newcomers
We’re all familiar with Rowling, Martin, Toline, Lewis and other celebrated authors. However, the fantasy genre is filled with countless other talented and prolific authors. Along with Liu, there is:
- Ted Chiang (Exhalation)
- Cornelia Funke (Inkheart, Pan’s Labyrinth)
- Blake Crouch (Dark Matter)
- Christopher Paolini (To Sleep in a Sea of Stars).
These are just a few present day fantasy authors whose stories continue to create wonderment for their readers. With Artificial Intelligence expected in the coming years to play a larger role in our lives — personally, professionally, creatively — expect the fantasy genre to push the final frontier even further.
Making Your Fantasy a Reality
As for Bynx, we’ll continue to collect new-age fantasy novels. We can’t, however, forget the classics. In addition to the above noted works, you will find such titles as The Martian Chronicles, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Ready Player One and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy among our fantasy collection.
