The novel draws from Ballard's personal experiences during World War II, and centres around a young British boy who lives in Shanghai around the time of the Pearl Harbor attack. Shortlisted for 1984 Booker Prize, it was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and was the basis for the Oscar-nominated Steven Spielberg movie (1987) starring starring Christian Bale, John Malkovich, and Miranda Richardson.
